Tropical Smoothie Cafe has signed a 40-unit development agreement that puts four Northeast territories at the center of its next growth push: Albany, Westchester County and the Bronx in New York, plus Western Connecticut.
The franchisee is Aurify Kingstar, a restaurant operator and investor with a portfolio that includes Five Guys and Wingstop as well as proprietary concepts. The companies said Aurify has developed, operated or acquired more than 300 restaurants. The first Tropical Smoothie location under the new agreement is expected to open in early 2027, but the announcement did not identify a city, address or full construction schedule for that first cafe.
That distinction matters. A development agreement reserves a pipeline and establishes obligations; it is not the same thing as 40 open restaurants. Neither party disclosed the rollout period, investment amount, individual site count by territory or whether any leases have been signed. Those details remain the key execution questions.
The deal is still material because of where the units are planned. Tropical Smoothie has far less density in New York and Connecticut than in several of its mature Sun Belt and Midwestern markets. Restaurant Dive, citing the brand's 2026 franchise disclosure document, reported 62 New York cafes at the end of 2025 and six in Connecticut at the beginning of 2026. Forty additional units would be a meaningful expansion even before accounting for when, and how many, ultimately open.
The four territories also require different real-estate playbooks. Albany offers a smaller metropolitan market with suburban trade areas. Westchester County carries high household incomes and expensive real estate. The Bronx presents a denser urban operating environment. Western Connecticut adds commuter communities and a cross-border extension of the New York footprint. One multiunit partner can coordinate development across those boundaries, but the sites will not be interchangeable.
Aurify's experience is central to the logic of the deal. A 40-unit commitment asks a franchisee to build a real-estate pipeline, recruit managers, open stores in sequence and establish local supply and field-support routines. Prior experience with large quick-service systems reduces, but does not eliminate, those risks.
For Tropical Smoothie, the agreement adds contracted development while the chain is already operating at scale. The company said it has more than 1,750 cafes and remains on track to reach 1,800 by the end of 2026. Those are company-reported system figures, not a count verified independently by Braisepoint.
The first opening target gives operators and competitors the most useful near-term marker. Early 2027 is close enough for site announcements and local hiring to begin emerging, but the release offers no exact date. Treat any more specific opening claim as unverified until a lease, local permit, official location page or franchisee announcement names the site.
The larger strategic angle is franchisee concentration. Brands can enter underdeveloped territories faster when a well-capitalized operator accepts a large commitment, but execution depends heavily on that partner's development cadence. If Aurify converts the agreement into clusters rather than scattered single units, Tropical Smoothie can build local awareness, delivery coverage and field-support efficiency more quickly.
For now, the confirmed event is the 40-unit development agreement and its four target territories. The most important follow-ups will be the first exact address, the allocation of units across New York and Connecticut and the contractual development timeline.
