KFC is putting several reasons to visit into one restaurant, then asking which of them deserve a place in the wider chain.
The company says Open House will open September 26 at 8751 El Dorado Parkway in McKinney, Texas. A separate public celebration is scheduled for September 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Central. The restaurant’s advertised daily hours are 6 a.m. to midnight. KFC’s opening announcement
The menu adds breakfast sandwiches, coffee and iced lattes alongside boba refreshers and Krunch shakes. Bone-in chicken remains part of the offer. KFC describes the location as a working restaurant for identifying ideas it can extend elsewhere. KFC
That makes McKinney a useful place to watch the brand’s recovery effort. A restaurant can attract attention with an unusual menu or a striking building. The harder task is giving people a reason to return after the novelty fades.
The competitive backdrop explains the urgency. The Associated Press, citing Technomic, reports that KFC’s share of U.S. chicken-chain sales fell from 20% in 2015 to 8% in 2025. The overall category grew from $21.8 billion to $57.7 billion during that period. Those are market-share figures, not a claim that KFC’s own sales fell by the same proportion. Associated Press
The category’s expansion is the telling part: growing consumer demand for chicken has left plenty of room for competitors to capture business.
KFC has already connected its broader refresh to boneless chicken, customizable sauces and beverages bought outside traditional mealtimes. Its June global announcement described drinks already available in selected overseas markets, giving the U.S. experiment a wider base of product experience. KFC’s global strategy
At Open House, customers can order at kiosks and have employees bring the food to their table, according to AP’s preview. That pairs self-service ordering with a personal interaction later in the meal. Associated Press
Braisepoint’s operating view: The most useful result would be a clear picture of which additions earn their space and labor. Breakfast could bring business into earlier hours; specialty drinks could create afternoon visits. Both also introduce preparation, stocking and cleaning demands.
The questions to watch are practical. Does a beverage order add spending to an existing visit, or bring someone in who otherwise would not have stopped? Can the crew deliver food to tables while keeping takeaway orders moving? Do repeat visits hold up once opening-week curiosity passes?
A successful item also has to travel. Something that works in a purpose-built restaurant may need a simpler recipe, equipment setup or service routine before an older franchised location can execute it consistently.
KFC says it intends to scale its strongest ideas. The opening announcement does not establish a nationwide conversion schedule. KFC
McKinney can therefore produce a valuable result even if the rest of the system never looks exactly like Open House: evidence about which changes customers value enough to buy again.
