White Castle is entering select Murphy USA stores through a machine designed to produce hot branded food on demand.
Murphy USA announced an initial rollout of Automated Retail Technologies’ Just Baked platform in select larger-format stores. Customers order through a touchscreen and receive food in approximately two minutes, according to the company.
The format matters because it separates restaurant distribution from restaurant construction. Murphy USA says the self-contained platform requires less space, labor and infrastructure than a traditional kitchen. That could place a familiar restaurant product in locations where a full White Castle would not be practical.
For Murphy USA, the test is intended to add inside sales, traffic and basket growth to stores already serving fuel and convenience trips. For White Castle, it extends the brand into another everyday occasion without asking customers to visit one of its restaurants.
The initial announcement did not disclose the number of machines, specific markets, menu size or investment. It also did not promise a national rollout. The accurate description is a test in selected larger-format stores, not a completed expansion across Murphy USA’s more than 1,800 locations.
Automation changes the labor equation, but it does not remove the operating work. Machines still require replenishment, sanitation, maintenance and product controls. Customer acceptance will also depend on whether the food consistently meets the expectations attached to White Castle’s name.
What happens next is a performance test: uptime, preparation consistency, customer repeat use and the effect on each store’s total basket. If those measures hold, the platform can support additional locations and potentially additional brands.
