Papa Johns is moving into Walmart’s online shopping experience, giving customers another place to decide what is for dinner while they buy groceries and household supplies.
In a September 10 announcement, Papa Johns said delivery through Walmart Express Delivery will begin in selected markets this fall, with plans to reach thousands of participating restaurants nationwide. Availability will depend on the delivery address attached to a customer’s Walmart account.
Eligible shoppers will see Papa Johns in the Walmart app’s Restaurants tab. They can customize a meal, order it separately or combine it with a Walmart purchase. The selection includes pizza, wings, sandwiches, sides and desserts.
The companies describe Papa Johns as the first national restaurant brand on the service whose orders are fulfilled entirely outside Walmart stores. The partnership connects restaurant production with a retail ordering channel, expanding the occasions when shoppers might encounter the pizza brand.
For restaurant operators, that is the central business question: can visibility inside an everyday shopping trip generate an additional meal purchase? A customer buying supplies for a movie night or a busy week has already opened the app. Putting prepared food in that journey creates another opportunity to compete for the dinner order.
It also adds operational questions that the launch announcement does not answer. The companies did not detail restaurant economics, a market-by-market schedule or a universal delivery charge. The partnership’s value to individual restaurants will depend on the orders it brings and the cost of fulfilling them.
Customers should check the app or Walmart.com using their actual delivery address. The announced nationwide expansion is a goal for participating locations; it does not mean every Papa Johns restaurant is available through Walmart today.
